About Montreux

During the Middle age (1317), the actual city of Montreux was composed by “le Châtelard” and “les Planches” that were part of the “Vaud Savoyard” county. In 1538, the Berner army took the control of the “Vaud savoyard” county and imposed the Reformation to it. The county had to wait until the Vaud revolution in 1768 to be liberated from the hold of Bern. From the beginning of the 19th century, Montreux became an attractive city for artists and tourists because of the development of hotels and the calm of the Geneva Lake. The Chillon castle mainly inspired Lord Byron when he wrote his famous “Prisoner of Chillon” in 1816. Nowadays, Montreux has became a well-known place for its cultural (Jazz festival, Festival of laugh) and sport (Montreux Volley Master) events.
